Do you have existing skills in your area of study?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the competency/s of an individual that may have been acquired through formal, non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual meets the requirements specified in the training package or VET accredited courses
If you believe you meet all the requirements of a unit of competency, you should discuss this with your trainer and submit an application for RPL prior to the course commencing.
Participants seeking recognition of prior learning gather evidence to demonstrate their competency in the unit/s and an assessor will then determine if RPL can be granted.
The process is individualised and evidence can take the form of interviews, certificates, references, observations, 3rd party reports, case studies, role plays, written and/or verbal knowledge questions.
Recognition can be assessed through an assessment only pathway. This process provides Participants with the opportunity to undertake the unit assessment only and where competency is demonstrated training and/or further evidence is not required. Please discuss this option with your trainer.
How to apply for RPL:
- Read through your course content by unit and review the competency requirements.
- Identify any units of competency for which you believe you meet all requirements.
- Discuss your suitability for RPL with your trainer who will trigger the RPL process for you.
- Attend an initial interview with an assessor who will discuss the evidence you will need to gather to
demonstrate your prior learning.
Evidence may include:
- Producing Statement of Attainments for accredited training courses
- Acquiring references from a manager or supervisor
- Participating in interviews and role plays
- Completing case studies or completing a quiz
- Gather the evidence you require to demonstrate your prior learning then contact your assessor to book a review meeting.
- Bring your evidence to a review meeting. If your evidence includes interviews or role plays they will
be conducted during this appointment. - Your assessor will review all of the evidence and advise you of the results.
Assessment only pathways
Recognition of prior learning may also be obtained by completing an assessment that demonstrates
your competency. If you would like to recieve recognition through an assessment only pathway please
talk to your trainer.
Where RPL is not granted, or the ssessment only pathway result is determined as ‘Not competent’
additional fees will be applicable to access further training and assessment.
